The Old Girls New Coat
At a meeting of Grosmont Events earlier this year the Chairperson asked the audience if there was any other business and someone asked “Can we do something to decorate the Town hall and make it look more welcoming”. The reaction from everyone at the meeting was “Let’s do it”.
Grosmont Community Council were approached and agreed to meet the cost of the decorating materials and we would provide the willing workforce from around the village to decorate the staircase and hall which would also complement the recently refurbished ground floor rooms.
Many villagers volunteered their time over three weekends in October and early November.
Armed with cleaning materials, abrasive paper and a few tubs of filler we made a start at 10.00am on the morning of Saturday 19th October. Over this first weekend we prepared the walls and paintwork for the first coat of paint.
The second weekend we completed both glossing the paintwork, emulsioning the walls and with Mark Whitaker’s eagle eyes doing a grand job of filling in the cracks in the walls and paintwork.
By the third weekend, we set about cleaning through and finishing off. Everyone took to their allotted tasks with incredible energy and enthusiasm fuelled constantly with tea, lunch time bacon butties and cake ably supplied by Jo Whitaker.
That afternoon we had a Topping Out celebration sit down lunch for all of the volunteers in the newly refurbished Town Hall.
It was amazing to see how everyone took so much pride in what they were doing and the atmosphere during the whole period was one of enjoyment and fulfilment in seeing such a great result.
Many thanks to you all.
