Grosmont, located in north Gwent and separated from Herefordshire by the River Monnow, was overrun by the Normans by the end of the 11th century.

Grosmont became an important lordship, eventually becoming part of the Duchy of Lancaster.

The first castle was built around 1136, though the earliest stonework dates to around 1200.

One of the largest parish churches in the area, with a unique 13th-century Nave. The tower and spire were added in the 14th century.

An elegant architectural feature added to the castle, from later work on the structure.

During the medieval years, Grosmont was a thriving market town, which contributed to its population and significance.

Over time, Grosmont's importance diminished, and it lost its market privileges. The population began to dwindle.

Extensive restorations were made to the church.

The population peaked at 742, far below its medieval levels.

Farming was the major occupation, with around fifty farms, though this number has since decreased.

Currently, there are only a dozen or so farms, with local and external farmers taking up the land.

Despite the lack of industry, the village remains socially active with a shop and a popular pub.

There was probably a wooden castle at Grosmont during this time.

The first stone building, the great hall, was constructed around this period.

These were added when Hubert de Burgh, Justice of England, held the castle.

Henry III, after dismissing de Burgh, took control of Grosmont. While Henry and his army were camped in tents outside, the Welsh attacked, causing the loss of his baggage and horses.

Grosmont Castle, along with Skenfrith and White Castle, became part of the earldom of Lancaster, held by Henry III’s son Edmund.

These were built, adding more comfort to the castle. Edmund's grandson, Henry of Grosmont, was made Duke of Lancaster by Edward III.

Henry of Grosmont’s grandson, Henry IV, ascended the throne in 1399, making Grosmont Castle and the duchy royal property once again.

In a battle with the royal army on the banks of the Monnow, Owain Glyndwr burned some houses in Grosmont. This event was recorded by Prince Hal (the future Henry V).

During the English Civil War, Charles I spent the night in Grosmont, though not at the castle, which had by this time declined in importance.

The church was constructed around the same time as the castle. The magnificent Norman nave has survived with only limited restoration.

John Seddon reconstructed the Early English chancel and saved the church from a ruinous state. He also added the glass screen dividing the chancel and nave.

The church was described as “a noble Early English building” in the Gwent volume of the “Buildings of Wales” series.

The church was featured in Simon Jenkins’ “Wales Churches, Houses, Castles.”

The church holds regular weekly services, with a church choir, Sunday school, and bell ringing by local and visiting bands.

The Norman nave is used for various village activities, including archery, concerts, village markets, ceilidhs, an annual produce show, wedding receptions, and other celebrations.
