Grosmont Village Shop

Grosmont Community shop – next steps.
Our village shop closed recently.
We’ve set up a group to look at setting up a community and volunteer-led shop. In August 2025, we held a public meeting, and there was a good level of support for a community shop.

Can you help? Let us know if you’d like to be part of:
  • the steering group;
  • a group surveying the village;
  • visiting other community shops (to understand how they did it);
  • or any other way you can help.

Questionnaire coming soon!

We need to know what you would like from a community shop – a questionnaire has been delivered to your house (in Grosmont and Llangua). Please complete it and drop it into The Angel or the collection box in the Nave.

If you live nearby, and haven’t received a questionnaire, please email us and we’ll send you a link to complete one on-line.
Completed questionnaires will  be entered into a raffle.
We’ll present the research to a public meeting in the near future.

Options appraisal
Join us at the Nave on Wednesday 15 October at 6pm. We’ll be discussing the different options for a community-led village store.
Your views needed! Please come along.

Steering Group

The Steering Group has set up work strands

  • Survey group: asking the village for its views on the future shop;
  • Learning from others: visiting and building links with other community groups that operate village shops;
  • Legal structure: the group setting up a community benefit society that will run any future shop.

The Steering Group meets monthly to check in with these three groups and the discuss other matters.

At its meeting on 3 October 2025, the Steering Group:

  • had an update from each group;
  • decided to set up a community benefit society and appointed the initial directors;
  • had an update on other matters such as meetings with potential funders.

What is a Community Benefit Society?

A Community Benefit Society (CBS) is a type of co-operative. It operates for the benefit of the community and can issue community shares, to raise money.

Operating on the basis of one member, one vote, regardess of the number of shares held, a CBS cannot pay dividends to shareholder members; all surpluses (or profits) have to be reinvested in the Society, or in the local community.
