And here are some of our recent village events…

Angel Inn Beer & Cider Festival, 21-23 July 2023

From Jim & Chloe at the Angel: “What a Beer & Cider Festival we’ve had! A huge thank you to everyone that partied with us, to the talented musicians for providing the perfect soundtrack and, most of all, to our fantastic team who worked their socks off this weekend! THANK YOU!”

Grosmont Village Day, 1 July 2023

What a treat it was to have the return of village festivities in the castle grounds after such a long time!

Thank you to Grosmont Events for putting on a fabulous family afternoon of fun. Grosmont Futures would also like to thank everyone who came to their stand and took time to find out more information on the progress of the Town Hall Project and completed the questionnaires. It was great to see some of our young teenagers giving their input too. The winner of the free raffle prize draw, Sara Tebbutt, was surprised and delighted with her prize!

Again, a very very big thank you to you all for your continued support. This project won’t be successful without it.

Midsummer Madrigals, 25 June 2023

A wonderful afternoon was had by all at Grosmont Castle. Thanks to Jonny Small for the fantastic conducting and the Kitchen Singers for entertaining the picnickers so beautifully!

Grosmont Open Gardens, 11 June 2023

Glorious gardens and homemade cake delighted over eighty visitors on Sunday 11 June. It’s fair to say that the roses were looking their best and that all the gardeners had worked extremely hard in the weeks beforehand. So many lovely comments about the gardens, our village and our community. Well done all.

And here are some of the village events we’ve had recently…

The Grosmont Futures AGM – Friday 19th May.

This is a service for anyone in the village to remember a loved one. All anyone has to do is give Reverend Gaynor Burrett their name for them to be included. They can leave it in a box by the door in church or email it to Gaynor on revgaynorphb@gmail.com if they would rather.

You do not have to attend the service to have a loved one remembered at the service, but all are very welcome.

EARLIER EVENTS – have a look to see what has been happening in our lovely village.

THIS FRIDAY 3RD MARCH AT THE CHURCH – TICKETS ON THE DOOR!

Grosmont St Nicholas Church, Friday 3rd March 2023, 7pm. Tickets online (https://ridinglights.org/max-maxwell/ ) or at the door.

The Uneasy Sleeps Of Max Maxwell
…waking up to artificial intelligence

A new one-act play by Richard Hasnip, followed by conversations with leading
scientists.

Max’s grip on domestic practicalities is slipping, but if his brain-child is a success will all be
forgiven?

Cutting-edge computer programmer Max Maxwell is days away from launching his new ‘ethical’
A.I. system, while his wife Ruth, vicar of the local church, is doing her best to support him – as
well as their teenage son Sam, avid consumer of social media, and her mum, Helen,
experiencing dementia in a local care home. And here there’s talk of introducing robot carers.
In his sleep-deprived state, a few colourful dreams and imaginary conversations with his
‘project’ help Max to explore the possibilities of what A.I. could become in the not-so-distant
future.

All this provides an entertaining human story to spark questions about the ways in which A.I.
already, and surely will, interact with our lives. After the play, there will be a short interval
followed by live Q&A with expert scientists from the local area (read their biographies here).
Come and raise your questions.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE UNEASY SLEEPS OF MAX MAXWELL?
The Uneasy Sleeps of Max Maxwell is set in the present. A range of
current A.I. issues are dramatised within the familiar hurly-burly of
family life. The family includes Max, a cutting-edge computer
programmer launching his new ‘ethical’ A.I. system and his wife Ruth,
vicar of the local church, who supports her husband’s work, though
not entirely uncritically. They have a teenage son, Sam, not
particularly interested in A.I. but an avid user of social media and
largely unperturbed by the algorithms which shape his interests. Then
there is Ruth’s mum, Helen, experiencing dementia in a home where
robot carers are being trialled. Together, these characters provide a
wonderfully entertaining context in which to highlight some of the
ways in which A.I. interacts already (or will do very soon) with our
everyday lives, in both positive and challenging ways.
